The Athens International Airport Board announced today the building of a new terminal. The city's airport has been struggling to cope with the increasing number of tourists flooding the capital throughout the year. The German company in charge of the airport announced the creation of thousands of working positions prior to and after the opening of the new terminal, anticipated later next year.

The job offered will help relieve the capital and the country of one of its major problems: unemployment. Indeed, Athens ranks third in the list of the European Union capitals with high unemployment rates among young adults. "This new venture will certainly give work to thousands of young people who are striving to make ends meet in one of Europe's most expensive capitals," says the Mayor.

The construction of the new airport terminal is expected to begin this June and be completed in approximately one and a half years. Its size will not exceed that of the existing terminal but will be large enough to serve around 5000 passengers per day.

The funding of the construction will come both from state and private resources, namely the Greek government and the German Company, Sky High, which for the most part also funded and oversaw the construction of the whole airport back in 1999. Sky High has been also running the airport since its opening in 2000.
